Versioning & Release Management (Semantic Import Versioning)

Duration: 15 minutes

Semantic Import Versioning (SIV)

This lesson explains the main concept clearly with beginner-friendly examples and background so you can learn why the code works.

Go modules enforce major version in the import path (e.g., v2).

module github.com/yourname/pkg/v2

Clients import:

import "github.com/yourname/pkg/v2"

Tagging releases

$ git tag v1.0.0
$ git push origin v1.0.0

A tag automatically updates go.mod on go get.

Releasing a major version

  1. Create a new branch v2.
  2. Update module path.
  3. Tag as v2.0.0.
